A Summer in Gascony is Martin Calder’s first travel book. It was inspired by one summer in Gascony that turned into an enduring love affair. A true Francophile, Martin Calder has lived and worked in Paris and other parts of France, but he is always drawn back to Gascony. This far southwest corner of France appeals to his enjoyment of the simple pleasures of life on the land, the sights and smells of the country, good food and wine, and hard work. A Summer in Gascony has allowed him to share his love of Gascony with others and to present the special qualities of the Gascon way of life.
Martin Calder’s day job is senior lecturer in French language and literature at the University of Bristol. He had a previous career as a civil engineer. He enjoys travel and a variety of sports. He can cook a mean magret de canard but his cassoulet still needs some work!
